Who we are

Buchan Dial-a-Community Bus (DACB) is a growing social enterprise in North East Aberdeenshire, focussing on reducing social exclusion through the provision of high quality community transport delivery and support services. It is a community owned Company Limited by Guarantee and Scottish Charity which has been operating for over 15 years.

Originally DACB operated as a weekly service utilising a borrowed social work minibus, driven by off duty police officers.

Since 2000 we have evolved into a major transport provider in the Buchan area and currently run services in Buchan and in Aberdeen City. We provide thousands of passenger journeys per year. None of these services are commercially viable but all provide an essential link for elderly, disabled, rurally and socially isolated people.

DACB aims to provide the very best services achievable whilst adhering to the utmost levels of quality.

Vehicles are maintained to the highest standards including 6-8 weekly inspections, lift services / tests, regular and intensive maintenance etc.

Staff and volunteers are trained to the appropriate levels and our administration systems comply with all expectations/requirements.

We are founder members of the Aberdeenshire Community Transport Forum and regular attendees of the Aberdeenshire Bus Forums where we have built excellent relationships with the local bus operators.

We strive to be an exemplar of best practice in all areas of our operation, a fact that that has been recognised locally and nationally. In 2006 we were “Transport Team of the Year” finalists in the 2006 Scottish Transport Awards, gaining a Highly Commended. In 2007 we were named SCVO’s Charity of the Year and in 2010 we won the “Most Improved Community Transport Operator” Award at the Community Transport Association’s Scottish Conference. 2011 brought the award of CTA UK’s “Best Rural Community Transport operator”.

Due to the nature of our industry, volunteers and staff work very closely together and the transport team of DACB is made up of the volunteer Directors/Management committee and the staff, backed up by other volunteers who assist with the actual work of driving, escorting etc.

DACB and DAB Plus currently has 15 staff, a group of volunteer Directors and a Company Secretary as well as a volunteer Management Board; all of who are skilled at multi-tasking.
The Board represents a cross section of the community and each Board member brings specific skills to the table and they all represent a part of our organisation.

We work closely with partner organisations such as Police Scotland and Aberdeenshire Council. As mentioned earlier, one management committee member is the local Community Learning Worker and is a vital link to local youth forums and expertise.

The training that DACB offers all staff and volunteers is extremely thorough and has been instrumental in maintaining our unblemished safety record. All our volunteers and staff access training through our Social Enterprise DAB Plus Driver Training.

The success of DACB is further demonstrated by low staff turn over and a high volunteer retention rate. We have also provided a route into employment for several volunteers who have taken up paid posts within DACB over the years.

We are very committed to our Equal Opportunities policy; with the behaviour of equality for all being deeply entrenched in the ethos of both DACB and DAB Plus. This relaxed, inclusive attitude is evidenced by the fact that not only do we work with many people of differing backgrounds; we also have many staff that could be said to be in minority groups.

We have no barriers to the client groups that we carry and over the years we have worked with a range of individuals including; people for whom English is a second language, recovering addicts, transsexuals and a great many other minority groups. We value integration and open acceptance throughout the organisations and under no circumstances do we allow any type of discrimination by clients, staff or volunteers.
