Ode to Dial-a-Bus - 9/07/06
Written and read by Maureen Stephen at
the 6th Birthday Party on Saturday 9th July 2006.
Happy Birthday Dial-a-Bus, I really wish you well
Happy Birthday Dial-a-Bus, it’s quite a tale to tell -
It all began in ‘99 and Greta, she’s to blame
A bus that goes, with no breakdowns
That really is the game
Get funding from the Lottery
Let’s buy our own four wheels
So Norma, Kerry D and me went on the funding trail
Not one, but two green buses bright began our brand new fleet
and Rachel joined our little band and put us on our feet
She shaped and moulded all we know and taught us all new tricks
Before we knew, we soon had three, which makes our fleet complete.
Norma, what would we do without Norma?
Norma, she wears many hats, amongst them as a trainer and
Alan does his bit as well to keep us law abidin’
Our drivers Bill and Chris, I know, you think, they are both
angels
Whilst Carol, Chris and all the rest are equal in their halos
Now Viv and Liz control the cash (that’s whilst she’s
not at bingo)
They tell us what the balance is and what we can expendo
A funding team of great esteem we found this was a musto
Soup and sweet, Pearl’s toffee treat, and bingo nights
agusto
They never stop until they drop, that’s Mairi and her
helpers
They’ve swelled the coffers of our group, without them
we would falter.
And then there was Jim, what can I say about him?
Tho’ he’s now back amongst the fish
We’ve hooked him good and proper,
Come join the management, we said,
Or you will come a cropper!
In the office, oh dear me, the mayhem it is frightening
For Helen, Lynn and Matthew too,
The questions are unending –
Can I go on the bus today – I need to see a Dr
Can I go on the bus today – my best friend says that I
ought to!
Can I go on the bus today – to do the ASDA trip
Can I go on the bus today – I’m fed up and I’m
lonesome
They always try, when’er they can to give you what is
wanted
Although at times, it can’t be done the call won’t
go unanswered
A volunteer, a comfy car, an alternative provided
The best is done to make the run, no-one is disappointed.
There’s lots of laughs, there’s sometimes tears,
the hardwork is unending
But one thing’s sure, it’s all worthwhile to keep
the wheels a turnin’
Without yourselves, there’d be no bus, our volunteers
we thank you
Our staff, what can I say of them, they’re priceless and
we owe you
So here’s to DAB and all it does, may it’s end be
never-ever
And here’s to you, who use the bus, please all go on forever.
